Essay 1: How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA program to help you achieve your future professional goals? You might consider your past experience, short and long-term goals, and resources available at Wharton. (500 words)
Tips from the adcom:
We recommend approaching this essay by addressing these three points:
The Setup: This is who I am, what I’m doing, and what I’ve learned
The Pivotal Moment: I realized I don’t know enough about X and need to gain skills in X to succeed
The Future: These are my short-term and long-term goals, and why I need an MBA from Wharton to
achieve them
Essay 2: Taking into consideration your background – personal, professional, and/or academic – how do you plan to make specific, meaningful contributions to the Wharton community? (400 words)
Tips from the adcom:
This essay provides you with a space to share how you can add value to our student-led community.
When approaching this essay, it’s helpful to mention some of the extracurricular and/or co-curricular
involvements you hope to participate in at Wharton and how your previous experiences might allow you to positively influence those spaces.
Optional Essay: Please use this space to share any additional information about yourself that cannot be found elsewhere in your application and that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee. This space can also be used to address any extenuating circumstances (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, areas of weakness, etc.) that you would like the Admissions Committee to consider. (500 words)
Tips from the adcom:
Bullet points are okay!
This essay is a good place to address information that you believe warrants any additional context.
Acknowledging any part of your application that you might feel is “weaker” will not disadvantage you in
any way.
Required Essay for all Reapplicants: Please use this space to share with the Admissions Committee how you have reflected and grown since your previous application and discuss any relevant updates to your candidacy (e.g., changes in your professional life, additional coursework, and extracurricular/volunteer engagements). (250 words)
Other Application Components:
Recommendations:
Wharton requires two recommendations from individuals who know your performance in a work setting, preferably your current or former supervisors.
Recommendation questions are:
1. Please provide example(s) that illustrate why you believe this candidate will find success in the Wharton MBA classroom. (Word count: 300)
2. Please provide example(s) that illustrate why you believe this candidate will find success throughout their career. (Word count: 300)
Resume:
Submit a one page resume that illustrates your “your functional job skills, breadth and depth of experience, demonstrated leadership and management skills, and your potential for growth”
Interview:
Interviews are by invitation only. The Wharton interview comprises a team-based discussion (TBD), which is a 35-minute exercise where you work with another 4-5 fellow interviewees to find the outcome of a question given much before the TBD. Following the TBD, you will have a 10 minute one-to-one interview with an adcom member to reflect upon your TBD performance.
Reapplications:
Reapplicants have to complete the requisite essays along with the reapplicant essay (mentioned above).
